Joshua Tree National Park Picks

Joshua Tree National Park has the rugged appeal of all things desert and rocks. Whether you are exploring with kids, in a group, or on your own, this park has something for everyone.

There are so many great hikes that it can be hard to narrow it down. This is a list of my favorite trails, those that I would recommend and personally revisit.

THE BASICS

  • Joshua Treen National Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is fall or spring, when temperatures are cool and comfortable. Summers are hot. Consider avoiding the park when extreme weather can lead to dangerous hiking conditions. After a rainy season, desert blooms can be seen at the park from March to May.
  • The gates to the park are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including all major holidays.
  • There is an entrance fee to visit Joshua Tree National Park. You can pay online, at the entrance station (on your way in or out), or at the visitor’s center.
  • Cell reception at the park is very limited, so plan ahead and download your maps before entering the park. Be smart, let someone know where you are going and which trails you plan to hike.
  • Pets are not allowed on trails, must be on leash and remain within 100 feet from paved roads.

TRAIL PICKS

1. Ryan Mountain

Length: 2.9 miles \\ Elevation Gain: 1,062 feet
Now I may be biased when it comes to this trail, because we have a Ryan in the family, but name aside, this is a great hike with a beautiful summit. Ryan mountain is one of the tallest points in Joshua Tree with its peak sitting at 5,457 feet. While the round trip distance is just under 3 miles, this hike can be challenging with its steady incline to the summit.

2. Heart Rock and Arch Rock via the Arch Rock Trail

Length: 1.7 miles \\ Elevation Gain: 108 feet
This trail is relatively flat and is only about 100 feet of elevation gain. Hike a short distance across various terrain types, such as sand, dirt, and uneven rocky surfaces to get to these cool granite formations. Both spots are great for photos and attract many visitors. Get there early! The trail to both spots is well maintained and is easily accessible by people of all ages, so bring the kids. They will particularly enjoy some rock scrambling to get to the Arch Rock.

*Note, that pets (including emotional support animals) are not allowed on this trail.

3. Cholla Cactus Garden

Length: 0.2 miles \\ Elevation Gain: 9 feet

4. Jumbo Rocks Playground
