Kid Friendly Trails In Los Angeles

Are your kids bored? Spending too much time on their devices? Sometimes, an adventure is all that is needed. And trust me when I say, that the best adventures will usually take place in nature, on a trail.

Together with my kids, we have compiled some of our favorite hiking trails in or around Los Angeles. Whether your little ones are budding explorers or seasoned trailblazers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

1. Griffith Park Merry Go Round to Beacon Hill
Distance:

Nestled within Griffith Park, this trail is perfect for a family outing. This easy loop trail starts at the Merry Go Round lot and winds through the beautiful Griffith Park. Along the way, you’ll see towering trees and multiple junction where you can venture off in many directions. Your destination is Beacon Hill! The last section can be steep for little feet, but keep reaching to the top and you will be greeted by a breathtaking view of the city below. For kids, it can feel like standing on top of the world!

2. Runyon Canyon Park – Runyon Canyon Loop Trail
Distance: Approximately 2.7 miles round trip

For families seeking a bit more of a challenge, the Runyon Canyon Loop Trail delivers stunning views of the city skyline along with a moderate workout. Don’t worry; it’s still kid-friendly! The trail features wide paths and gradual inclines, making it suitable for little legs. Plus, furry friends are welcome, so bring along the family dog for some extra fun. Be sure to snap a family photo at one of the scenic overlooks.

3. Franklin Canyon Park – Discovery Trail
Distance: Approximately 2 miles round trip

Nature awaits at Franklin Canyon Park’s Discovery Trail, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. This leisurely stroll meanders through lush woodlands, past a tranquil pond, and even includes a visit to the park’s iconic duck pond. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings, from turtles basking in the sun to birds flitting among the trees. It’s a nature lover’s paradise!

4. Temescal Canyon Loop Trail
Distance: Approximately 2.6 miles round trip

Located in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Temescal Canyon Loop Trail offers a little bit of everything for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Kids will delight in crossing babbling streams via wooden footbridges and exploring shaded groves filled with native flora. The highlight of the hike? A scenic waterfall cascading into a refreshing pool, perfect for a post-hike splash!

5. Malibu Creek / M*A*S*H TV Set

Located in Malibu Creek State Park, the trail is relatively easy, making it suitable for kids and hikers of all ages. The trail begins at the main parking area and winds through picturesque landscapes, including rolling hills, oak woodlands, and open meadows. As you hike along the trail, you’ll pass by the serene Malibu Creek, which is a great spot for a quick rest, allowing the kids to explore and perhaps even spot some wildlife. The highlight of the hike is reaching the iconic M*A*S*H TV set site. This is where scenes from the famous 1970s and 1980s television show were filmed. Kids and adults alike will enjoy exploring the remaining set pieces, including vintage vehicles and interpretive signs that offer a glimpse into the show’s history. The open area around the set is perfect for a longer break, with plenty of space to spread out, have a snack, and take in the views of the surrounding hills.

6. Old Zoo Loop at Griffith Park

The hike is relatively short, about 2.5 miles round trip, and is easy enough for young children to enjoy without getting too tired. The loop is well-marked and mostly flat, with a few gentle inclines. One of the highlights of the Old Zoo Loop is the chance to explore the remnants of the old Los Angeles Zoo, which operated from 1912 until 1966. You’ll come across old animal enclosures and cages, now covered in graffiti and surrounded by nature. Kids will love the opportunity to explore these abandoned structures. The eerie yet fascinating ruins will spark their imaginations and sense of adventure. Wildlife is often spotted in the park, including birds, squirrels, and even the occasional deer or a coyote.
